Software Freedom Day - Sun 20th Sept

Software Freedom Day is an annual, global celebration of this and an opportunity to showcase developments in open source technology.

This year's celebrations in Wellington are happening on Sunday 20th September at the Town Hall and Michael Fowler Convention Centre, from 9am to 5pm.

Anyone can come along, and it's free! (Koha always appreciated)

What can your student's expect?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We'd like to see more children discovering and exploring free and open source software, so we've designed two special programmes of activities this year: one for older students and one for younger children.

Younger children can have fun exploring the famous little green machine from the One Laptop Per Child programme. There will be plenty of OLPCs to go around and they are really great fun to use – for kids of all ages.

Older students will have a chance to try their hand at programming, pick up some free software or talk about what they are already doing with free and open source applications, like Blender. They'll also get to chat with some of the people involved in making free software, to ask questions and even find out whether a career in free software is something to aim for.

SFD09 is a relaxed family event with plenty going on, including a hackfest, installfest, a makerfest, barcamp and techtalks. There will be food and refreshments provided.

You can find out more about the day by visiting the Software Freedom Day website:

http://www.softwarefreedomday.org.nz/

What do we need you to do?

Please distribute and encourage students/parents to register at

Y13 Homework

Develop Your Idea
This week you homework is to develop your concept (big idea) and designs for your video game. Your class presentation will identify a number of points:
  • Working title?
  • Purpose? (Fun? Learning?)
  • Genres or styles of game?
  • Hero (person? Animal? Thing? Abstract?)
  • Villians? Boss Characters?
  • Aims? Tasks? How to characters move?
  • Levels & obstacles?
  • Basic look & feel?
Remember it's not enough to just describe it in simplistic or limited terms, "it's a shooter".

Look at other games examples and resources:
