SBC Web Designers

Hi Everyone,

You can download from the J drive a booklet for the web design topic. If you've forgotten to bring your USB email me for a copy. It’s a large attachment so hopefully it will get through by email. I can't post a public link to it though because of copyright licenses etc.

There is more help available from:

http://sites.google.com/site/sbcwebsitedesign/home/html-css-tutorials-examples

This has links to a huge variety of tutorial websites.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

You will need to learn how to

1) Understand the HTML code tags – do the 10 exercises in the booklet Web Getting Started
(if that link doesn’t work he should go to http://sites.google.com/site/sbcwebsitedesign/home and look under “Free Downloads”)

2) Be able to create a simple website using a template

3) Be able to create a simple site using code only

4) Be able to create a simple site a web editing program (such as Dreamweaver or Kompozer)

SOFTWARE:

You can use Notepad for writing the code.

For a web editing program he can either:

a) download a free 30day trial of Dreamweaver & use the video tutorials on www.teach-ict.com

b) download a totally free copy of Kompozer from: http://kompozer.net/ and google some free tutorials

TASKS:

I want you to

1) complete the 10 basic HTML exercises (in the booklet Web Getting Started)

2) use further online tutorials (e.g. www.Notepad.com or www.w3schools.com )

3) Apply what you have learnt to create a basic site for Carrot Hills Donkey Sanctuary using following info:
http://www.ictcoverlessons.com/cover_lessons/websites/carrothills/carrothills.html

HOSTING:

You can save your work to a USB memory stick and bring it in to school or upload it onto the internet using free web hosting, e.g. the FTP account you may already have with Xtra or an alternative such as http://www.000webhost.com/order.php and choose a subdomain name to host it under.

You should also check out the free google sites you can set up with our SBCSchool.com Google Apps using your normal school login / password – then using their sitebuilder software:
https://www.google.com/a/sbcschool.com

I trust this is more than enough info to be going on with.

Any queries, email me at mharrison.ict@gmail.com or mharrison@sbc.school.nz

Kind regards

Matt Harrison
